Abstract

ABSTRACT

The study of present realism has now received a lot of interest in local literature after being criticised and rejected for a while by literary activities in the country. As the country is in its developing phase, Malaysia has not yet conducted much research using this theory. In the context of the works of the National Laureate, the study of realism that examines the thoughts of the National Laureate is also identified as still not being done much by researchers in this country. This study therefore examines the thoughts of National Laureate, Rahman Shaari in his novel Cengkaman Hasrat (2015). This is a qualitative research using content analysis method of the novel Cengkaman Hasrat (2015) based on the principles of realism criticism by Lukacs (1963, 1978, 1989, 1990) in order to identify significance thoughts to improve the lives of poeple in Malaysia in particular. Library methods were also used to identify the relationship and impact of the National Laureate Rahman Shaari's thoughts on the development of society and the country. The three objectives determined are, to analyse the ideas of complete realism expressed by Rahman Shaari in his novel Cengkaman Hasrat, to detail the relationship and impact of the Rahman Shaari thoughts towards development of society and country, as well as presenting the strengths, advantages, and importance of the works of a National Laureate. This research finally revealed that the novel Cengkaman Hasrat does, in fact, include comprehensive realistic thinking that is founded on the growth of society and the nation.
