The Journal of Issues in Education (known in Malay as Masalah Pendidikan) was established in 1977, shortly after the founding of the Faculty of Education at the University of Malaya in 1963. The journal has been completely online since the year 2020. Its primary objective was to serve as a scholarly bridge between academic research and the evolving national education landscape of a post-independence Malaysia. During its early decades, the journal played a critical role in documenting the development of pedagogical strategies and curriculum reforms, publishing contributions from many of the country’s most influential educational pioneers in both Malay and English.
As the field of educational research grew more specialized through the 1980s and 1990s, the journal maintained its prestige by shifting toward a more rigorous peer-review process and broadening its scope to include international perspectives. This period saw it become a cornerstone for Southeast Asian academic discourse, particularly in teacher training and educational psychology. In the modern era, the publication transitioned to a digital-first model under the Universiti Malaya E-Journal platform. While the faculty has since launched more niche publications for management and technology, the Journal of Issues in Education remains the faculty's flagship multidisciplinary title, continuing its legacy of analyzing complex educational problems through a contemporary lens.
