Linking Islam with Violence: The Case of 'Image Crisis'
Main Article Content
Abstract
Islam is often introduced synonymous with violence by dominant media and academia in contemporary West. However, it is undeniable that there are Muslim extremist groups who perpetrate violence in the name of Jihad. This situation gives a bad name to Islam and defaces the true image of jihad as it is, in the eyes of many, a ‘violent movement’, or at least considered as a motivating factor for such a movement. Such portrayals of the image of Islam went viral after September 11, 2001. This incident created a new zeal to world community for committing itself in combating terrorism. Fighting terrorism United States and its allies, along with other choices, resorted to military means. With this approach US led combatant powers, instead of eradicating the movement, has in fact contributed to spreading more violence and atrocities. Thus, this article aims at exploring some key factors for which the image of Islam is in many cases tarnished.
