The Maqasidic Approach in Tafsir: Problems in Definition and Characteristics

Abstract
The present research aims to study the concept of purposive (maqasidic) exegesis of the Holy Qur’an. It also aims to highlight the most significant characteristics that distinguish it from other types of Qur’anic exegesis which may helpful in constituting a solid foundation to reexamine the contemporary exegesis. The research concludes that this particular approach in exegesis is concerned with presenting the objectives of the Qur’an, exploring the meanings of its texts, and explaining their implications. In addition, it also explores some of the characteristics of this approach. It is expected that this study would contribute to understand the Qur’an from the angle of its general objectives.
